Mary Campion, CSJP (1917-2022)

Sister Mary Campion was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 22 July 1917. She was the eldest, and Sister Madeleine (R.I.P.) was the youngest, of seven children born to James and Eva Campion. Most of her early life was spent in Scotland. On the 15 August 1935, she left home and came to Nottingham, England, to join the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace.

Her first ministry was at a residential facility for children and adult women with special needs in St. Charles, Carstairs, Scotland. In 1970 Sister Mary was asked to move to Mount Carmel Convalescent Home, Rothesay, Scotland. Mount Carmel was run by our Sisters and catered for older people. Sister Mary looked after the guests and endeared herself to all who came to Mount Carmel. From there she moved to our convent in Leicester, England, and soon got involved in visiting people who were housebound and/or in hospital, bringing them Holy Communion and praying with them. During this time, her mother became ill, and Sister Mary went home to care for her until her death.

Sister Mary enjoyed the simple things in life. She was a sociable person and had a wonderful sense of humour. Sister Mary was very hospitable and loved to see people calling. She loved needlework and was an outstanding seamstress. Whatever needed to be made Sister Mary was on hand.

She was blessed with good health, was a sprightly, lively woman. Well into her 90s, she was able to take the bus into town and attend Saturday morning Mass at Holy Cross Church, Leicester.

In May 2013 Sister Mary came to Rearsby, Leicestershire, England. The spaciousness of the grounds suited her. She enjoyed wandering round the grounds delighting in the wildlife, the rabbits, etc.

In the summer of 2016, Sister Mary returned to Leicester Convent. One of the first celebrations on her return was her 100th birthday. This was an exciting day as many sisters, associates, relatives, and friends came to the party. The card from Her Majesty, the Queen, and the letter, medal and gift from Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, took pride of place. Since then, we have enjoyed an annual birthday party on the 22nd of July.

Over recent years her independent spirit remained strong. Sister Mary lived a prayerful, happy life and availed of every opportunity to attend Mass and participate in other devotions. Over recent months she had been unwell and had told us she was ready to go when God wanted her. Her final words to Louis, her nephew, were, “Be a good boy and say your prayers.” She lived to celebrate her 105th birthday.

Sister Mary died on 15 August 2022, 87 years after entering in Nottingham on 15 August 1935. May she now rest in God’s Peace.
