Joanne Rusch, CSJP (1931-2024)

Sister Joanne Rusch was born on October 28, 1931, in East Brunswick, New Jersey, the third child and only daughter of Joseph Anton and Beatrice Adelaid (Mendoker) Rusch. Raising a family during the Depression, Joseph and Beatrice made sure to instill in their children the responsibility to help the poor. Sister Joanne first learned of her family’s commitment to this cause when her mother became involved in local politics specifically to advocate for the poor. Sister Joanne would carry these lessons, steeped in compassion and response, with her as she embarked on a life dedicated to serving others.

Sister Joanne entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace at St. Michael Novitiate, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on July 31, 1951, and pronounced final vows there on August 22, 1957.

Sister Joanne earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, and a Master of Science in Secondary Education, Administration and Guidance from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California. She began her career teaching at elementary and secondary schools in New Jersey and California, eventually transitioning to roles in program development, administration, guidance, and activities. In 1974 Sister Joanne was recognized as an Outstanding Secondary Educator of America.

After two decades in education, Sister Joanne was asked to serve in healthcare ministry in the Finance Department at St. James Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. She then took a position at St. Peter’s Medical Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she worked as the Manager of Accounts Receivables for many years. Later, she became the Manager of Mission Excellence Services, which allowed her to act as an advocate for patients, employees, the needy and poor. After 34 years of service at St. Peter’s Medical Center, Sister Joanne retired to St. Michael Villa. She generously continued to share her financial expertise with the Congregation as an active member of committees and as a mentor to the lay finance staff.

Sister Joanne died peacefully at St. Michael Villa on January 15, 2024. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Rusch and Alfred Rusch, and her niece Joanne Huwyler and is survived by her niece Beverly Gearhart and her nephew Joseph Rusch.

A combined wake service and Liturgy of Christian burial was held on January 22, 2024, at St. Michael Villa, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, New Jersey.

Sister Joanne will be remembered for her keen intellect, compassionate heart, no-nonsense spirit, and as one who offered love and concern to all.
