Erma McCarthy, CSJP-A (1933-2023)
The one word that best describes Erma McCarthy is “charitable.” She was giving of her time, her energy, and any resource she had available to her. Helping those in need was Erma’s passion. She created, organized, and contributed to programs that served the homeless at St. Mary’s Church as well as at St. Boniface in Jersey City, New Jersey, and at Eva’s Village in Paterson, New Jersey. During the winter holidays, Erma also led food and toy collection campaigns for the needy. Her hard work was honored in 2000 by the Archdiocese of Newark who presented her with the Jubilee Medal Pro Meritis for distinguished service in the archdiocese.
The eldest of eight children, Erma Mary Egan was born on April 22, 1933, to John Joseph and Erma (Reinhart) Egan. She graduated from the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest, New Jersey, and attained an accounting degree from Seton Hall University’s Evening Division. Erma was a longtime parishioner of St. Catharine Church in Glen Rock, New Jersey, where she was a member of the Parish Pastoral Council.
Erma’s family was her biggest joy. Married to Robert McCarthy for 63 years, together they exemplified “the meaning of family.” She enjoyed spending time with her two children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Erma and Bob were introduced to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace’s associate program by their sister-in-law Noreen Egan, CSJP-A. They were proud associates for over 35 years. Together, they spent tireless hours serving the community in any way possible. As a member of the Guild, Erma helped to organize and execute many events for the sisters’ enjoyment. Her warm and friendly presence was always welcomed and appreciated at St. Michael Villa.
Erma McCarthy died on May 19, 2023. She was predeceased by five siblings: John Egan, Veronica Fleissner, Eleanor Lombardo, Tom Egan, and Cathy Egan. She is survived by her husband Robert, brother Bryan Egan, sister Maureen Graziano, daughter Rosemary, son Bryan, two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
We give thanks for Erma’s life and know that she inspired others to emulate her kind and gentle nature.
