Eithne Brady, CSJP (1933-2024)

Sister Eithne Brady was born on February 6, 1933, in Inishmurray, an island located four miles off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland. She was the fifth of nine children born to Michael James and Ellen (Harte) Brady.

In 1951, as a teenager, Sister Eithne emigrated from Ireland to the United States with her sister Mary to join their two eldest brothers, John and Dan. For five years, she lived and worked in New York City. During this time, Sister Eithne was introduced to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace by a priest friend who knew the sisters at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Sister Eithne entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace as a postulant at St. Michael Villa, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on September 12, 1956. She was received as a novice on July 2, 1957, and pronounced final vows on August 22, 1964.

Sister Eithne earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Caldwell College. She taught at St. Anne’s School in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, for one year before joining Our Lady of Peace School in Fords, New Jersey, to teach for twenty-nine years. In 1990, she moved on to St. Peter’s Elementary School in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she shifted from the role of teacher to assistant principal. Upon her retirement, she volunteered at St. Ann’s Nursing Home in Jersey City, New Jersey, before relocating years later to St. Michael Villa.

Sister Eithne will be fondly remembered for her love of God and all God’s people, especially the young and the young at heart! She incorporated her love of dance in her ministries and Congregation celebrations.

Sister Eithne died peacefully at St. Michael Villa on March 6, 2024. She was predeceased by her brothers, John, Bernard, and Michael Brady, and sisters, Jane Melly and Mary Powner. She is survived by her brothers, Daniel and Patrick, and her sister Tessie Currid as well as many nieces and nephews.

A combined wake service and Liturgy of Christian Burial was held on March 9, 2024, at St. Michael Villa in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, New Jersey.
