Kenmare Press is an imprint of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. In accord with our tradition and the spirit of our founder, Margaret Anna Cusack (Mother Francis Clare), we are delighted to launch this publishing project during our 135th anniversary year. Mother Clare was herself a prolific writer, most often publishing as M.F. Cusack or Mary Francis Cusack. By 1870, more than 200,000 copies of her works had circulated throughout the world. Profits from the sale of her books were used for the Sisters' work with the poor. Today, many of her books are in the public domain and available to read or download online.

Images of Refuge

by Margaret Jane Kling, CSJP

This collection of letters and documents records the period of time that Sister Margaret Jane Kling, Sister Andrea Nenzel, and others served in El Salvador with the Jesuit Refugee Service, living and working with refugees in San José Calle Real. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Salvador, the camp initially served about 100 refugees, the population later swelling to over 700 during its peak. A remarkable historical record, it also highlights how little has changed for refugees in war-torn countries.

My Friend Joe: Reflections on St. Joseph

by Susan Rose Francois, CSJP

St. Joseph, husband of Mary and foster-father of Jesus, is central to the Christian story. Yet, so little is known about St. Joseph, either as an historical figure or as recorded in scripture. Much of what we understand about Joseph comes to us from tradition, art, and the lived experience of the faithful over the centuries.

Sister of St. Joseph of Peace Susan Rose Francois reflects on her growing spiritual friendship with St. Joseph, who she affectionately calls her friend Joe. Inspired by photographs of Joseph taken by the author, she reflects on her personal encounters with Joseph in conversation with church tradition around this saint. Through art, prose, history, and prayer she encourages the reader to discover, or deepen, their own spiritual friendship with St. Joseph.

Peace Pays a Price: A Study of Margaret Anna Cusack

by Dorothy A. Vidulich, CSJP

Margaret Anna Cusack, the founder of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, was bold, courageous and visionary. She dedicated her life to fighting social injustice, especially toward the poor, women, and children. In 1884, she founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, a religious order whose members still actively live her founding charism of peace through justice.

Based on Cusack’s many books, biographies, letters and other research, Dorothy Vidulich, herself a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace, has written a concise study of Cusack’s life. In particular, she has focused on Cusack’s courage to confront the discrimination and injustice promulgated by society and a patriarchal church, which ultimately forced her to leave the religious order she had founded for it to be saved.

Originally published in 1975 and revised by the author in 1990, we are delighted to reissue Peace Pays a Price during our 135th anniversary year as the first Kenmare Press publication.
